Bass Connection

Bass Connection was a foundational youth music project based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, that played a pivotal role in shaping the city's local music scene from the late 1990s through the 2000s.

Overview and Legacy

  • Youth Empowerment: Beyond just music, the project used youth development workers to help young people set personal goals and improve school performance through musical engagement.

  • Grosvenor House: The initiative was famously headquartered at Grosvenor House, where many local musicians began their careers.

  • Notable Alumni: Artists such as Jack Martin (Charmtype)Robb Blake, Ben Whatsley (Love is Enough), and Sadie-Lee Goddard (Get Good) are among the many who credit the project with launching their musical journeys.

  • The Rock Awards: Bass Connection was the catalyst for the annual Rock Awards, which later evolved into the Salisbury Music Awards.

Key Figures

  • Rose Gale: The co-founder and a highly respected youth worker, Rose Gale was the "heart" of the scene. Following her death in 2006, the Rose Gale Trust was established in her memory to continue providing grants and support to young people in South Wiltshire.

  • Keith Gale: Rose's husband and a fellow youth worker, Keith continued to run the project and the Rock Awards for many years, dedicated to keeping the live music scene alive in the city.

Recognition

In recent years, the impact of Bass Connection has been celebrated by local venues and organisers as a major reason for Salisbury’s vibrant music culture over the last 30 years. It is remembered not just as a club, but as a community that gave young people the confidence to perform on stage.
